Lunch Program: Methods of Controlling Red Imported Fire Ants - Kimberly Engler '00, M.S., BCE - Education & Technical Director, ABC Home & Commercial Services

Presentation Summary:

Fire ants came into the United States from South America in the 1930s and have been spreading ever since! Red imported fire ants love wet, rainy, cooler days, so with all the rain we have been having and the approaching cooler fall temperatures, it's likely their mounds will be popping up all over the San Antonio area. Kim Engler will educate us on the most effective methods of managing and controlling the infestation of these rapidly reproducing pests.

Speaker Bio:

Kimberly Engler '00 attended Texas A&M University in College Station, where she earned a B.A. in Biology and an M.S. in Entomology with an emphasis on Urban and Structural Entomology. In 2004, she began her career at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Dallas as an Extension Program Specialist for Urban IPM. There her main research focus was on the red imported fire ant, but she also studied other landscape and ornamental insect pests such as thrips, grub worms, and Florida Wax scales. In July of 2011, Kim moved from Dallas to be closer to her family in New Braunfels and accepted the Bed Bug Manager position with ABC Home and Commercial Services in San Antonio. Since 2017, her role at ABC Home and Commercial Services has changed to educational director with an emphasis on training all new pest and lawn technicians. She enjoys her challenging role at ABC as it allows her to work closely with the pest control specialists and customers, all while reducing the number of urban pests in central and south Texas.
