Lunch Program: Col (R) Sam Hawes '81 - Assistant Commandant for Recruiting, Office of the Commandant


Colonel Hawes is a native of Dallas, Texas.  He attended Texas A&M and earned his undergraduate degree in Business Management from Texas A&M University in 1981.  While at Texas A&M, Colonel Hawes was a member of the Corps of Cadets.  He achieved the rank of Cadet Major, commanded Company A-1 as a senior cadet, and was a member of the Ross Volunteer Honor Company.  As an ROTC cadet he completed U.S Army Airborne and Ranger School, received the Marshall Award as the most outstanding Senior Army ROTC cadet, and was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate. 

Upon graduation from Texas A&M in 1981, he was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant.  He served 28 years in the Army in many of the Army’s most storied units including command of the Second Battalion, Twenty Eighth Infantry Regiment.  He served his final three years at Texas A&M as the Professor of Military Science and retired from the Army in 2009.  

Colonel Hawes is now the Assistant Commandant for Recruiting with the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets where he has helped to grow the Corps to over 2,400 cadets.  He has been married to Linda for 33 years and their daughter recently completed her service as an Army Nurse Corps officer.
