The Speaker

Paul Hofmann joined the Bush School Department of Public Service and Administration in the fall semester of 2022, assuming the role of Associate Professor of the Practice. His primary responsibility is providing programmatic leadership for the newly established Bush School Program in City and County Governance.

In 1981, Paul obtained a BA in Political Science from Texas A&M, followed by an MPA in 1983 from the same institution. He began his professional journey with an internship at the City of Austin City Manager's Office in 1983, which led to a fifteen-year career with the City of Austin. During this time, he spent twelve years with the Austin Public Works Department, where he led a team responsible for the planning and execution of the city-wide capital program. In 1998, Paul left the City of Austin and served as the city manager or city administrator for various Texas cities, including Alvin, Kerrville, Castroville, Bellaire, and Bastrop. Additionally, he worked as the Assistant City Manager for the City of Sugar Land.

Over his impressive 39-year career, Paul has actively participated in the Texas City Management Association and has fostered numerous lifelong professional relationships. Many of his former colleagues, who have also served as city managers, count among his closest friends. Paul's professional interests revolve around topics such as professional ethics, leadership, sustainable development, and building trust between elected and appointed officials.

Paul met his wife Barb while they were both graduate students at Texas A&M.
