Monday Lunch | Dr. Steve Wilson
The Eternal Wonder of Oral Histories
The Speaker
Dr. Steve Wilson has a “checkered past” because of his unusual career pathway. He spent 21 years in the USAF as an intelligence officer with a tour in Southeast Asia, quietly traveling to some really bad places. After military retirement, he was promoted to
VP of technical services in a national environmental consulting company, after five years of working in the field doing soil and water sampling across the U.S. He earned a Ph.D. in psychotherapy with a specialization in telemedicine. He was recruited into the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) as the first Chief Information Officer/Dean of
Technology and, at the same time, was UIW’s Director of Institutional Research. He was
a Fulbright Scholar. After ten years at UIW, Steve worked in a custom courseware
development firm and then an international education non-profit before final
“retirement.” In terms of community service, Steve has served in the Texas Silver-Haired
Legislature, a joint City-County Commission, and recently graduated from the Masters
Leadership Program of Greater San Antonio.
Steve’s presentation is entitled, “The Eternal Wonder of Oral Histories.” In 2021,
Steve created 12 oral history videos, focusing on the lives of fellow residents from the
retirement community in which he lives. His video series was called, “The Archives of
Our Lives” and was shown several times each month on the community closed-circuit
TV channel and on YouTube. Through this exhausting research and video production
process, Steve learned several lessons about the wonder of people’s lives and the need
to capture their life experience through video oral histories. He will share his journey
with you.
