About the Presentation

How Being an Aggie Shaped my Healthcare Journey

My journey in healthcare and as a healthcare leader has its roots in Texas A&M, not just in the classroom setting but because of a program at the school. The EMS system at Texas A&M was staffed and run by students. It is here I had my first taste of leadership as the deputy chief of EMS for Texas A&M University. Following graduation my journey in healthcare continued as I took a job as a flight paramedic with a new air medical program in San Antonio, San Antonio AirLife.

Transitioning from the bedside (or jet and helicopter stretcher) to leadership was gradual at first and then accelerated as I gained responsibility within AirLife and then into the Baptist Health System with roles like: Director, Service Line leader, Assistant Administrator, COO, Interim CEO, CEO and then Group CEO. I credit my time at Texas A&M and hard-wiring of the Aggie Values like Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect and Selfless Service with shaping my 32-year leadership journey. I believe these same values are paramount to leader in an industry where lives are at risk.
